Choosing Scooter Oil in Singapore: AMSOIL 10W-40 or Premium 5W-40?

 Oilmax Singapore

Scooters are a common sight on Singapore roads, from daily commuters to riders doing food delivery for long hours. This post is for scooter riders and the workshops that service them. It explains what a scooter needs from its engine oil, and how the two AMSOIL scooter oils we carry, Formula 4-Stroke 10W-40 and Premium 5W-40, differ.

Why scooter engines work hard in Singapore

Most scooter engines are small and run at high rpm. Many are air-cooled, and the engine sits close to the rear wheel with limited airflow. In our hot weather and stop-start traffic, the oil has to cope with high temperatures for long periods. For delivery riders, the scooter may also run for most of the day with very short breaks.

As such, the oil needs to resist breaking down in heat and keep its viscosity. When oil thins out too much, protection drops and the engine runs hotter. This is where a full synthetic scooter oil should help.

AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Scooter Oil 10W-40

Based on AMSOIL’s information, this oil is formulated for air- and water-cooled four-stroke scooters. Currently, it is the AMSOIL scooter oil our partner workshops use most.

  • It is a 100% synthetic SAE 10W-40, rated API SP and JASO MA/MA2.
  • AMSOIL states that it resists breakdown at high temperatures and has strong shear stability, so the viscosity stays consistent.
  • It contains no friction modifiers, which matters for scooters with a wet clutch.
  • It also has an anti-corrosion additive for scooters that are parked for some time.

AMSOIL lists it for scooters from Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Vespa, Piaggio, Aprilia, Kymco and others, wherever SAE 10W-40 is specified.

AMSOIL Premium Scooter Oil 5W-40

According to AMSOIL, the Premium Scooter Oil is designed for daily-use and maxi-scooters, particularly larger four-stroke models with higher power and rpm.

  • It is a 100% synthetic 5W-40 rated JASO MA, and AMSOIL states it is also suitable where JASO MB is specified.
  • The 5W rating means it flows more easily at start-up than a 10W oil.
  • It is wet-clutch compatible, with no friction modifiers, and is made to hold its viscosity where the engine and gearbox share the same oil.

AMSOIL lists it for scooters that call for 5W-40 or 0W-40 oil, including models from Yamaha, BMW, Vespa, Piaggio, Aprilia, Suzuki and Kymco.

Which one is right for your scooter?

The first step is always the owner’s manual. It states the viscosity grade and the JASO rating your scooter needs. Based on that:

  • If the manual calls for 10W-40, which covers most everyday scooters, Formula 4-Stroke 10W-40 is the one to use.
  • If you ride a maxi-scooter and the manual calls for 5W-40 or 0W-40, the Premium 5W-40 is the better match.
  • If you are unsure, our partner workshops can check your model and advise.

In addition to engine oil, many scooters have a separate final-drive gearbox. The oil there is changed less often, so it is easily forgotten. Where the manual calls for an 80W-90 gear oil, AMSOIL Severe Gear 80W-90 is an option.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use car engine oil in my scooter?

It is not recommended. Many car oils contain friction modifiers that can cause clutch slip in scooters with a wet clutch. A scooter oil with the correct JASO rating avoids this. We explained this in more detail in our post on motorcycle oil.

How often should I change scooter oil?

AMSOIL recommends following the scooter manufacturer’s interval. For delivery riders and others who ride many hours a day, it is better to change at the shorter end of that range and to check the oil level regularly.

Do I need to add an additive to AMSOIL scooter oil?

No. AMSOIL does not recommend aftermarket additives with its Formula 4-Stroke Scooter Oil, as the oil is already fully formulated.
